On 14th February, I travelled to Cardiff for the wedding vow renewal of Mike and Carolyn at Portland House. When Mike booked me, he explained he was arranging the entire event as a big surprise for Carolyn. They have actually been married 29 years and have five grown-up children. It was very ‘cloak and dagger’ as he didn’t want his lovely lady finding out any details. She just knew she had to buy a new dress!
They arrived in a beautiful vintage bus with Carolyn wearing a lovely wedding dress and fur cape. Their son walked his mum down the aisle preceeded by their daughters and daughter-in-law. Mike’s younger brother Glyn is a celebrant and conducted a hand-fasting ceremony along with his wife. Invited family and friends were encouraged out of their seats to form a large circle and a very long piece of ribbon was held by everyone. Eventually Mike & Carolyn’s hands were tied together and a chosen few added additional items to their tied hands with words of congratulations. To conclude the ceremony, a human tunnel was formed which Mike and Carolyn ran through before ‘jumping the broom’! They then enjoyed a drink of mead and some of the fruit.
With the ceremony complete, the lovely staff at Portland House re-arranged the room in preparation for their sit-down meal. Sadly it rained non-stop, so we were unable to get any outdoor pics. We improvised instead and had fun indoors! There were some lovely speeches after the meal and I left with the band singing and ready for their fun evening ahead. After such a lovely wedding vow renewal at Portland House, I wish Mike and Carolyn many more happy years together.
